You can set performance
parameters on practically every computer that comes with a built-in CD-ROM.
Go to Control Panel/System/Performance, click on the File System button
under Advanced settings and open the CD-ROM tab. You can increase your
cache size and inform Windows 9x of your CD-ROM's speed so it can optimize
access to the CDs you use.
* * THE WORM TURNS
* *
By now, you've
heard about the dreaded Worm.Explore.Zip.
Initial reports
said the virus spread only via e-mail messages containing the zipped_files.exe
attachment that harbors the worm. (To avoid being infected, don't open
the attachment, and immediately delete the e-mail.) But Microsoft
confirmed this week that it can also spread through a network if a system
drive or the Windows directory has full access rights for shared users.
Then it can wreak havoc on Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. More details
at: http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB19990615S0003
In the meantime,
Microsoft has released an update to Outlook's email ttachment security
that will increase protection against viruses and worms such as this one
and recommends that you install it. Get the scoop, and download the update
by going to: tp://microsoft.com/presspass/virus/06-14worm.htm
Visit your antivirus
software vendor's Web site to obtain more information and the latest virus
updates against this, the Melissa and other viruses.

Some programs tell
Windows to launch them at start-up by placing a shortcut in the StartUp
folder. To remove start-up programs, right-click on the Start button and
select Open. Double-click on the Programs folder, then the StartUp folder.
Delete shortcuts to programs you don't want to run at start-up. Or just
drag the shortcut out to the Desktop to remove temporarily it from
the folder. You can drag it back or delete it later.

When you "add a
folder" to your Start menu by dragging and dropping it onto the Start button,
you're really just adding a shortcut to the folder. It's usually better
to put the actual folder there instead of a shortcut. The Start menu
is just a special folder in the Windows folder called, unsurprisingly,
"Start Menu." If you put folders that contain your documents into this
folder, you gain three advantages. First, what you see on the Start menu
is always correct; delete a folder, for example, and it disappears from
the Start menu as well, while a shortcut would remain. Second, actual folders
appear on the Start menu as cascading menu items, whereas shortcuts to
folders just open the folder on your Desktop when selected. And finally,
the Start menu is always available, even if your Desktop is packed with
clutter.
* * BUDDY
* *
You can get double
-- or even triple -- the mileage from your Win98
PC with the Buddy
system from Vega Technologies. The Buddy lets
you hook up a second
monitor, keyboard and mouse to your PC so
two users can work
on one system independently. You can use different apps and access the
printer, hard disk and all other peripherals at the same time. Two users
can even surf the net using one modem, phone line and ISP connection.
Vega claims the system won't slow down, unless you're using he most graphic-intensive
applications. The Buddy includes a card that plugs into your PC, a connector
box for attaching a second monitor, keyboard and mouse (which you provide),
and software that takes advantage of the multitasking power of Windows
98 and 95. Buddy also includes a 15-foot cable; a 50-foot cable is optional.
Add a second Buddy system, and three users can share one PC.

Closing all these
open folders down one by one can take quite a few clicks. Take the easy
way out: To close the whole kit and kaboodle in one fell swoop, hold down
the Shift key and click the Close button on the last window you opened.
That will close all the windows you opened from that last window all the
way back to My Computer.

Although the Disk
Defragmenter utility speeds up file access, it doesn't defrag your swap
file, which is the file Windows uses as virtual memory. You can get additional
performance gains by disabling your swap file, defragging your disk, then
re-enabling the swap file. The new swap file will be effectively defragged
and therefore faster. To do so, right-click on My Computer and select Properties
from the Context menu. Click on the Performance tab, then the Virtual Memory
button. Select the "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" radio
button, then select Disable Virtual Memory. Click on OK, then OK again.
After defragging your disk, follow the same procedure above, but this time
select "Let Windows manage my virtual memory setting."

Some Registry changes
require restarting Windows before the changes take effect. However,
there's a way to reinitialize your Registry and refresh your Desktop without
fully restarting the OS. Save your work, then press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring
up the Windows task list. Select the Explorer entry and click on End Task.
If the Shutdown screen appears, click on Cancel. After a few seconds an
error message will appear. Click End Task & Windows Explorer
will reload with any new Registry settings.

You can select
groups of icons or folders on the desktop or within folders by clicking
outside the body of icons and, while holding the left mouse button, dragging
a rectangle to surround all the icons you want to select, then letting
go. You can then move, copy or delete them en masse.
